LAGC Heads to TPC Southwind for the FedEx St. Jude Championship

TPC Southwind opened in 1988 on the site of a former dairy farm, designed by Ron Prichard with the help of Fuzzy Zoeller and Hubert Green. The terrain is relatively flat and the setting distinctly suburban Memphis. Seems pretty straightforward, but water comes into play on 11 holes, and the zoysia rough is extremely thick. Keep it in play, and you can score, but Southwind can also find ways to make you pay.

The back nine is where you get your signature holes. The par-3 11th is a smaller version of the island green at TPC Sawgrass. The par-3 14th plays 205, but can stretch to 231 — this one has ranked as one of the tougher par 3s on TOUR. Nothing crazy, but well over par. And the 18th demands a tee shot alongside a water hazard that runs the full length of the left side of the hole. Make a mistake late on Sunday, and the tournament could slip from your grasp. Unfortunately for Tommy, and fortunately for Rosey, we know that all too well.

So yes, the course has its shine, but a big reason we get playoff golf in Memphis is because of FedEx. They’ve been a longtime partner of the PGA TOUR.

FedEx, headquartered in Memphis, became title sponsor in 1986 — the company's first-ever sports sponsorship. Their partnership remains a staple, highlighted by the TOUR’s yearly ranking system, the FedExCup Standings.

The tournament's connection to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital also gives the week a purpose beyond just the stakes on TOUR. Since 1970, this event has raised over $86 Million for St. Jude to benefit the hospital and the children facing cancer and other life-threatening illnesses.

All four LAGC players are in the field this week.

LAGC Player Storylines

Justin Rose returns to TPC Southwind as defending champion. His win here last August capped a remarkable stretch that launched him into this season with confidence and momentum, with an early win and a high Masters finish. Since then things have quieted, but this week he has the chance to remind us all over again of his greatness.

He’s playing to defend, but he’s also playing to remain safely in the top-30 over the next couple weeks.

Tommy Fleetwood arrives as reigning TOUR Champion, the title he claimed at East Lake Golf Club last September in what became the signature moment of his career. That win came just weeks after a difficult finish at the FedEx St. Jude Championship.

It looked like it was Tommy all the way, the 54-hole leader in Memphis. A bogey on 17th kept him from the playoff by one stroke, which made way for Justin Rose to claim victory. Tommy returns with a chip on his shoulder and redemption on his mind.

Collin Morikawa has had a season with a lot of ups and downs. An incredibly strong start has kept Morikawa safely inside the top-10, all but solidifying his position in the East Lake field, but since his back injury, he’s still finding his form. He’s had a couple great finishes since his return, and looks to build on that momentum with a win in Memphis.

Sahith Theegala has been one of the pleasant storylines of the LAGC season — making cut after cut, and finding himself squarely in the top-50, poised for a strong postseason run. A tough Sunday at the Wyndham Championship kept him from what looked like a sure top-10 finish, but you can tell his game is in fantastic shape. He can go low, and he’s one to watch out of those looking to sneak into the top-30.

This field is the cream of the crop — these are the guys who have earned it after a long season, so you’re sure to be watching the best that golf has to offer over the next 3 weeks.
